The Open by Lucy Van

$20.00 AUD

Available Stock:

Category: Poetry

Poetry. Fiction. Literary Nonfiction. Asian & Asian American Studies. Women's Studies. Introduction by Merlinda Bobis. All doors are open in Lucy Van's poetry. Ingress and egress are multiple, even coincident. We've just touched what's here, or are about to touch it, when apprehension is quickly uns ettled, halted or reconfigured. Because we're only passing through a door or another door is opening, as the poet offers: 'Another thought though (and oh, I think about how thought and though are very similar words).' Hers is a liminal though. Between what's touched and what's yet to be touched. Site of frisson. Contention. Then insight. "The book opens to Hotel Grand Saigon: 'I have gone back and now I am here.' 'Back' is her father's family and roots in Vietnam, opening the door to his migration history, only a peek, though ('Never write a poem about a boat'), then opening to Vietnam's colonial history. And now we are here where the Vietnamese staff 'are always ready to serve' the French and other holidaying Europeans and white Australians, and herself, the Vietnamese Australian poet 'coming home,' though also waited on or waiting in a gift shop and unable to ask, because she can't speak her father's language. Van's poetry is an ongoing decolonial passage. Each opened space and time takes to task the one just left, then comes home to the poet, her self-reflexive though pointing to her own entanglement. She's inside and outside these pasts and presents, or presences: touched and untouched."--Merlinda Bobis ...Show more

Slowlier by Ella O'Keefe

$20.00 AUD

Available Stock:
2

Category: Poetry

Says O’Keefe about her collection: 'Held under an incorrect adverb, the slowness of this book is expressed as intransigent buffering and refusal of optimisation. The book is shaped by a stubborn commitment to inclusive imprecision which seeks companionship with error and with the grit and offcuts we col lect in the course of living.Objects of the industrial world are beheld in their strangeness and excess. An awareness of the hands, machines and historic forces that produce our material realities directs these poems, along with the attempt to understand that objects arrive with afterlives and consequences.Archive-shuffling was a useful model for writing, one that was connected to a desire to amplify minor histories and attend to the technologies of connection that wire, thread and beam us into the present. Voices drop out, a phrase is misremembered, the test pattern is the viewing event. The poems in Slowlier are propelled by the oscillation between an acquiescence which can only wryly index decline, and the desire to use the poem to scaffold and energise activities that kick against the logic of inevitability.'Says Spahr about the book: 'Ella O’Keefe writes poems with the waste products of capitalism. She uses juxtaposition so that fragments of the world fl oat by, bumping up against each other. The poems travel, board planes, catch the bus, have a lot of walking to do.Unsurprisingly, things are oft en seen through a screen. Concerned with how products are created, she builds a complicated world, one that attends to the uneconomic fractions, the waste rock, and turns them into the poem, or ‘crystal form data-mining in the apricot light’.' Invitation to the Voyage by Charles Baudelaire; Beverley Bie Brahic (Translator)

$40.95 AUD

Available Stock:
2

Category: Poetry | Series: The\French List Ser.

"Baudelaire is indeed the greatest exemplar in modern poetry in any language," said T. S. Eliot. We experience Baudelaire in myriad ways through his multifaceted writing. His sensuous poems--dreams of escape to an impossible, preferably tropical, elsewhere--draw us in with their descriptive and perceptu al richness. There is also the bitter, compassionate, and desolate Baudelaire. Ultimately, Baudelaire's true genius might reside in his expressive force and in the tension between his passions and intellect. The latter is most evident in his control of rhetoric and poetic form, and--given the poems' density of language, thought, and feeling--his astonishing clarity.   This new English rendition of Baudelaire by award-winning translator Beverley Bie Brahic includes poems from his celebrated volumes: Les Fleurs du mal, Les Ã%paves, Le Spleen de Paris, and Paradis artificiels. It also includes several of his prose poems, as well as an excerpt from his famous essay on wine and hashish. The poems in verse have Baudelaire's French originals on facing pages; the prose poems, unaccompanied by their originals, are printed near the poems in verse with which they resonate. Complete with the translator's illuminating introduction and notes, this beautifully crafted volume is an important addition to Baudelaire's work in English translation.   ...Show more

Unanimal, Counterfeit, Scurrilous: New Poems by Mark Anthony Cayanan

$24.00 AUD

Available Stock:

Category: Poetry

"His is either a well-oiled universe or a chaos huddled together…he's a mannish character, unanimal, counterfeit, scurrilous."Unanimal, Counterfeit, Scurrilous is a work of wild erudition and rococo elaboration, a collection of poems that loosely channels the dynamic of desire and inhibition in Thomas M ann's novella Death in Venice. The poems follows the trajectory of the ageing Aschenbach's pursuit of youth and beauty, transmuting his yearning and resistance into jittery flirtations with longing, decay and abandonment against a backdrop of political violence. The poems have an exuberant candour, formed by polyphonic allusions which enact the intersectionality of the speaker; by turns melodramatic, flirtatious, satirical. Like the tragic protagonist of Death in Venice,Cayanan's collection manifests a longing for extroversion sabotaged by its own will. It is a queer performance of anxiety and abeyance, in which the poems' speakers obsessively rehearse who they are, and what they may be if finally spoken to.'An effusive yet metaphysical performance of 'unfinishable selves'…with deft use of allusion, allegory and mythic structures, Cayanan's prepossessing new book is frequently revelatory: In truth, when life happens, it happens in the fourth person.'  — Toby Fitch ...Show more

The Book by Stéphane Mallarme

$33.50 AUD

Available Stock:

Category: Poetry

The French poet St phane Mallarme (1842-98) was modernism's great champion of the book as both a conceptual and material entity: perhaps his most famous pronouncement is "everything in the world exists in order to end up as a book." A colossal influence on literature from Huysmans to Ashbery, art from M anet to Broodthaers, music from Debussy to Boulez and philosophy from Blanchot to Ranci re, Mallarme spent more than 30 years on a project he called Le Livre. This legendary, unfinished project is now translated into English for the first time. The Book was Mallarm 's total artwork, a book to encompass all books. His collected drafts and notes toward it, published only posthumously in French in 1957, are alternately mystical, lyrical and gloriously banal; for example, many concern the dimensions, page count and cost of printing this ideal book. Resembling sheet music, the lines are laid out like a musical score, with abundant expanses of blank space between them. Frequently quoted, sometimes excerpted, but never before translated in its entirety, The Book is a visual poem about its own construction, the scaffolding of a cosmic architecture intended to reveal "all existing relations between everything." ...Show more
