We're a small independent bookshop by the sea.
The bookshop has been run by Mathew and Lisa Jose since October 2016. It was established by Marylou Gilbert some years earlier. We have a small, carefully curated, collection of books with an emphasis on literary fiction, politics, cookbooks and quality children's books. We run a bookshop we would want to shop at, and we think you will too.
Mathew has loved books for as long as he can remember and, notwithstanding the cliche, becoming a bookseller was the realisation of a long-held dream. He spent almost twenty years as a political adviser, including senior roles in the office of two Prime Ministers. His favourite book as a child was Bows Against the Barons by Geoffrey Trease (sadly out of print). Other favourite books includeKeep the Aspidistra Flying by George Orwell, A Very British Coup by Chris Mullin, and Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo.
Lisa is a bookseller and silversmith. She holds a PhD in archaeology from the Australian National University and has been a trench supervisor and illustrator on numerous digs in the Middle East. Lisa's favourite book is Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut.
Lisa's jewellery label Stuart the Cat Designs was established in 2008. Her work can be found at The Bookshop at Queenscliff and other stores in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and the ACT.
Ellen the Dog
Ellen came to live with us from the RSPCA when she was a six month old puppy. She is now much older, in body at least. Ellen is the sweetest soul we've ever met. She is also the naughtiest. Her pastimes have included detaching all the wooden planks from our back fence and destroying Mathew's work mobile on a day he really needed it to take calls. Ellen isn't much of a reader, but if she was, her favourite book would be The Poky Little Puppy rather than Marley and Me because it has more pictures and doesn't have a sad ending.
Scully the Dog
Scully made a ready transition from greyhound racing to our couch which she now rarely leaves. Scully is grateful for the work of greyhound rescue organisations and campaigners for an end to greyhound racing. Her favourite book is A Greyhound, A Groundhog (pictured).
Stuart the Cat
Like Ellen, Stuart came from the RSPCA. Unlike Ellen, he doesn't enjoy a rub on the tummy or a scratch on the ears. Stuart enjoys having Lisa's jewellery label named after him, but wishes people paid in smoked salmon. Stuart says his favourite book is a private matter.
